Suicide Prevention - Autism

Parents/ Carers 60 minutes

The training list we offer in 60 minutes provides insights into the characteristics of autism.

Autism and Mental Health general session
This general session explains why autistic people may experience an increased likelihood of mental health challenges. The course focuses specifically on anxiety and depression and provides practical strategies that parents can try at home.

Supporting your child with emotional recognition
Explanation of why autistic individuals are more likely to struggle to recognise and describe their own emotions. This session will focus on practical strategies to support individuals to recognise their own emotions (including the use of emotion behaviour wheels).

Autism and Anxiety
This session will focus on how anxiety presents differently in autistic individuals and explains how anxiety interventions can be adapted for autistic individuals. There is a small amount of cross-over with the general Mental Health session, but this session is much more in depth.

Autism and Self-Harm
This session focuses on self-harm, including non-suicidal self-injury such as skin-picking, and explains what support is available to help you and your child.

Supporting your child with self-care (including sleep, healthy habits and nutrition)

This session will provide an overview of research on autism and self-care and provide tips on how to support your autistic children to practice self-care.

Supporting your child at transition points e.g. college/university
This session explains why transitional points are difficult for autistic individuals and what you can do to support your child.

Meltdown and Shutdowns Practical Tips
This session explains what meltdowns and shutdowns are, and gives you tips of how to support your child when they are experiencing them.

Introduction to stimming
This session explains what stimming (self-regulatory behaviour) is, and how you can support your child with stimming.

Supporting your child with rejection sensitivity dysphoria
Explanation of RSD, which is when individuals feel intense pain at rejection (either experienced or imagined). RSD is associated with neurodivergence (ASC and ADHD). This session will also give some practical strategies.

Supporting your child with pathological demand avoidance
Explanation of PDA, which is an autistic profile, associated with a greater-than-average refusal to comply with demands/requests from others. This session will also give some practical strategies

Supporting your child with sleep
A session that focuses on strategies to promote good sleep, and how these may be different than what is found in non-autistic individuals.
